Oxford Basketball mid-season check-ins: How are the Chargers faring into the new year?<\/h2>\n

A new year brings the promise of new beginnings, and for Oxford basketball it means an opportunity to bounce back from a subpar start to the season.<\/p>\n
The Chargers faced a difficult trip to Jefferson City, Missouri over the winter break to go 1-5 in total in the tournament against stiff competition.<\/p>\n
As the calendar turns to 2023 and the home stretch of the high school basketball season begins, here’s where the two teams enter regional play.<\/p>\n
men’s basketball<\/h3>\n
The Chargers sit 11-7 after kicking off the new year with a home win over Hernando on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The 68-50 win was their first in their last four games after going 0-3 at the Great 8 Classic in Missouri.<\/p>\n
Sr. Miles Louver led the Chargers to victory with a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds. This performance was a major breakthrough for the southpaw his shooter who entered the game shooting 26% from the field and 23% over the arc.<\/p>\n
He caught fire in the opening minutes of the game, sinking four triples in the first quarter as Oxford took a 27\u20138 advantage.<\/p>\n
“He just shot early and that’s good,” head coach Drew Tyler said. Confident and then mental for Miles, but now he’s watching that ball go through the hoop.”<\/p>\n
Starguard DJ Davis struggled to find his rhythm as he was constantly harassed by a mob of Tigers defenders.<\/p>\n
The junior combo guard entered Tuesday’s contest averaging 18.9 points per game, but managed only 4 points in the first three quarters of play before blowing up 8 points in the final period. .<\/p>\n
The Tigers also held off star freshman Adam Tyson, limiting the 6-foot-7 winger to 7 points on 3-for-6 shooting.<\/p>\n
Oxford start regional play on Friday before traveling to Grenada before returning home to host Tupelo on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The Chargers are considered in the mix for the Region 1-6A Championship, but will face stiff competition from Golden Wave and powerhouse Starkville.<\/p>\n
women’s basketball<\/h3>\n
500 with a big win over Hernando after a 1-2 win in Missouri.<\/p>\n
Oxford remained scoreless into the first quarter as the Tigers built a 17\u20130 lead before Hernando finally broke the scoreboard with 6:22 left in the second quarter.<\/p>\n
Sophomore CC Frierson appeared to dominate the win with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.<\/p>\n
The performance was the latest in a string of strong outings for the 5-foot-8-inch forward after averaging 11 points per game and earning All-Tournament honors at the Jefferson Bank Holiday Hoop Classic.<\/p>\n
“She’s been playing really well the last few weeks,” head coach Cliff Ormon said. “[We\u2019re] Definitely seeing some things work out for her and just playing everything as a sophomore. We’re getting to play extra games…and she’s making a huge difference for us.<\/p>\n
Oxford also had a good run from senior leader Olivia Waddell, who scored 13 goals and had three assists in the win.<\/p>\n
Same senior Kaylin Mathis also made her presence felt, bringing in 7 points, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 block despite struggling to see the ball through the net. .<\/p>\n
After failing to win in district play a year ago, the Lady Chargers face an uphill road in Region 1-6A before securing a playoff spot with a win over Grenada in the regional tournament.<\/p>\n
Their three district opponents boast a combined record of 33-5 this season. As such, the Lady Chargers will need to click on every cylinder to return to the playoffs for his fourth straight season.<\/p>\n
