An accident near Edendale on Boxing Day left one person dead in hospital and increased holiday tolls to nine.<\/p>\n

The latest casualties occurred around 7:20 pm on Monday after police were called into the crash on State Route 1 in Southland.<\/p>\n

Police today said the driver died of his injuries on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Police said an investigation into the circumstances of the crash is underway.<\/p>\n

This follows last night’s two deadly clashes that claimed the lives of four people.<\/p>\n

Two people were killed when two cars collided in Marlborough’s Wairau Valley.<\/p>\n

Shortly after 6pm, the police were called on SH63.<\/p>\n

A third was taken to Wellington Hospital with serious injuries.<\/p>\n

Emergency services also responded to a serious one-vehicle crash on Evans Street in Timaru.<\/p>\n

A police spokesperson confirmed they were called to the scene around 7:45 p.m.<\/p>\n

At 11pm, police confirmed that two people had died in the accident.<\/p>\n

The first fatal accident during the holiday period was a car accident in Manawatu on December 23rd.<\/p>\n

Police said a one-vehicle crash on Rongotea Rd was reported at 12:20 a.m. Rongotea.<\/p>\n

The driver, the only person in the car, was found dead at the scene.<\/p>\n

Two people died in another crash in the Northland area during this period.<\/p>\n

Jacinda \u201cCinda\u201d Sione-Lauaki died on Christmas Eve when her passenger car rolled over at Kotata Rise in Whangarei.<\/p>\n

An 18-year-old girl was enjoying a night out with friends, but at about 10pm, the car she and four others were in couldn’t make a right turn at a sharp turn, swerved off the road to the left, crossed the pavement, and drove off. Crashed. Bank.<\/p>\n

Senior Constable Warren Bunn of the Crash Unit said Sione Rauaki was thrown out of the car and found dead under the car about 60 meters off the road.<\/p>\n

He could not say whether others were forced out of the vehicle.<\/p>\n
