The Cheverus women’s basketball team had their biggest win of the season last week.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, the Stags managed to outdo themselves.<\/p>\n

Cheverus claimed their second win in seven days against an undefeated side in a 51-43 win over Oxford Hills in a match between the two top Class AA teams.<\/p>\n

Maddie Fitzpatrick and Emma Risotto each scored 15 points and Ruth Boles added 9 for the Stags (15-2).Their best basketball.<\/p>\n

“It really is. Getting to know this team, I feel a lot of the girls are stepping up. They all know their job and are doing a solid job for us.” I’m very happy,” said Goodman. “This was one of the most disciplined 32 minutes he’s ever seen a team play, both offensively and defensively. My team was just focused.”<\/p>\n

They had their reasons. Oxford Hills beat Cheverus 61-50 just ten days ago. After defeating the Golden Trojans, Stags knew he had the opportunity to face another challenge and reap some rewards.<\/p>\n

“I was (admittedly) a bit of a loser,” Risotto said. “But I came in with confidence so that I could step up to face this team.”<\/p>\n

Sierra Carson had 15 points, Ella Pelletier had 9 and Maddie Miller had 8 for the Vikings (13-1).<\/p>\n

“We cut it down to three in the fourth quarter and gave them chances, but we couldn’t hit big baskets when we needed to,” said Oxford Hills coach Nate Pelletier. “We’re trying to get 60 points, but we didn’t get to 60. If so, we win the game.”<\/p>\n

Both teams were on track to reach that mark after an energetic first half that saw them draw nine times before Cheverus took a 32-30 lead. Stags led him 40-36 to third and went up 43-37 when Megan Dearborn (6 points) knocked down his 3-pointer with 6:13 remaining.<\/p>\n

Oxford Hills fought back to gain possession at Carson 3, but Fitzpatrick made a free throw, Risotto (fighting an injured leg in the fourth) scored on a putback and Fitzpatrick missed the second. and became 48-42. Two and a half minutes left.<\/p>\n

Fitzpatrick, who had six points and five rebounds in the fourth set, said his team focused on defense in the second half.<\/p>\n

“We did what we planned,” she said. \u201cI think we were playing tighter[on defense]. To win against such a good offensive and defensive team, you have to play really good defense.”<\/p>\n

A Viking cannot mourn a lost opportunity to strive for perfection. Up next are matches against Gorham (8-7), Bangor (12-2) and Brunswick (14-1).<\/p>\n

“We don’t have time to watch this game,” said Peltier. “You have to look forward.”<\/p>\n
