BALTIMORE – The longtime legendary soccer coach at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County is stepping down.<\/p>\n

Pete Kalinghi will retire on April 1, 2023 after 32 seasons as a coach.<\/p>\n

Caringi has coached nine national teams and 11 conference championship teams.<\/p>\n

He coached the 2014 College Cup team, which won 320 games.<\/p>\n

Among active NCAA men’s head soccer coaches entering the 2022 season, Caringi ranked 17th with 310 total wins and 39th with a winning percentage of 59.5.<\/p>\n

He joined UMBC in the fall of 1991 and set a record of 15-5-1, tying the winning program mark in his first campaign. <\/p>\n

His 1999 team earned the program’s first NCAA Tournament bid, leading the nation with a winning percentage of 93.2 (19-1-2). After winning his conference title in the Americas East in 2010, 2012 and 2013, his team in 2014 won his fourth crown and kept a clean sheet in four consecutive NCAA Road Contests. , qualified for the College Cup in Cary, North Carolina.<\/p>\n

Caringi also presided over a UMBC Division I and league-sponsored team that reached the national semi-finals. The Baltimore native earned National Coach of the Year honors from the sport’s governing body, his NSCAA (now United’s football coach) and its most respected publication. soccer america<\/em>2014 season.<\/p>\n

Caringi finished his 32nd season as the Retrievers head coach, surpassing former UMBC head baseball coach John Jancuska (1978-2011). <\/p>\n

During his tenure, Caringi never had a losing streak in the fall campaign. <\/p>\n
