The program was forced to fold for two seasons due to lack of interest.

But fast forward to this season, and the Broncos can call themselves district champions for the first time in program history.

Sam Houston’s head coach Trey Jones said, “It’s great that they were able to finally wrap up and affirm all the hard work they’ve put in so far.” I’m especially excited and happy for the seniors who have been working with me all night.”

Sam Houston (15-4-2, 3-0-1) clinched the Division 3-II title on Friday with an 8-0 win over Opelousas (1-10-2, 0-4).

The Broncos did not have a team in 2015-16 and 2016-17.

The Broncos hadn’t made the playoffs since 2012 when Jones, who played in college for Delta State and was an assistant at Troy State and McNeice State, took over early in the 2018-2019 season.

“Coming back from a team that was completely canceled and being district champions is a big deal,” said Jones. “It’s been five years since we joined, and the last three years, including this year, we’ve made it to the playoffs. It’s the first time I’ve competed for

The Broncos set a single-season school record of 15 wins in an eight-man senior group led by captain and defender Jacob Brewster.

“It was really coming in and changing the culture,” Jones said.

“We tried to find someone who was athletic and athletic. What stood out this year was the senior leadership of Jacob Brewster.
