Norfolk, Virginia \u2013<\/strong> Even the Old Dominion’s sizeable home court advantage at Chartway Arena couldn’t save the women’s basketball team on a night when shooting went awry and seemed out of sync. <\/p>\nTexas State shrugged off a slow start, beating ODU 52-46 on Thursday night, giving the Monarchs their first home loss in 10 games. His 46 points for ODU were the fewest the Monarchs have scored in 22 games this season.<\/p>\n
ODU had just 20 of 67 shots (29.9%), including a 4-for-21 shot that gave Texas State a lead in the third quarter. <\/p>\n
ODU (13-9 overall, 5-4 Sun Belt Conference) jumped to a double-digit lead in the first quarter by beating Texas State (14-6, 6-3) to four points. But for some reason, the Monarchs didn’t play the tenacious defense or crisp offense they displayed for much of the season.<\/p>\n
With six graduate students and one redshirt senior, the veteran Bobcats played composure, beating the Monarchs 23-14 in the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n
“There were times when I was lazy,” said the ODU head coach. Delisha Milton Jones<\/dfn> Said. “It was a small thing to say that we weren’t really focused and there was no sense of urgency behind everything we were doing.<\/p>\n“And it cost us.” <\/p>\n
Amari Young<\/dfn>He had his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.But then the Monarch got cold and the Bobcats got hot.<\/p>\nJa’Kayla Bowie gave Texas their first lead at 35-34 early in the first quarter on a quick layup with 8:48 left in the game.<\/p>\n
Four minutes later, Lauryn Thompson made two free throws to make the lead 43-36.<\/p>\n
ODU rallied as follows Makeira Dickens<\/dfn> Scored a 3-pointer, Young hit a short jump shot, Jatizia Jones<\/dfn> A fast-breaking three-point shot to trim the lead to 45-44 with 3:10 remaining.<\/p>\nYoung then had a double-pan playup with 1:21 remaining to tie the game at 46-all.<\/p>\n
However, Monarch missed the final six shots and went stone cold for the rest of the way.<\/p>\n
Danasia Hood, a two-time All-Sun Belt from San Antonio, led the Bobcats by 18 points and rebounded a missed shot to give Texas State a 48\u201346 lead with 55 seconds remaining.<\/p>\n
After Dickens missed a three-point shot, Hood made two more free throws with 28 seconds remaining to make it a four-point game. <\/p>\n
ODU tried to recover but missed four shots in the final 16 seconds.<\/p>\n
Early on, it was Texas that failed to throw a ball into the ocean.<\/p>\n
The Bobcats made only 3 of their first 19 shots (15.7%), including 6 that didn’t touch the rim. In one stretch, the Bobcats failed to score for nearly eight minutes.<\/p>\n
ODU also struggled to shoot, but took a 18-6 lead three minutes into the second quarter. Then the Bobcats got hot and in the next three minutes he had five shots in a row. <\/p>\n
Ja’Kayla Bowie opened the game with a driving layup, a free throw and a 3-point shot to cut the lead in half at 18-12.<\/p>\n
of ODUs Kay Clark<\/dfn> They responded with a three-pointer, but then Taylor Pruitt made a short jump shot, Hood hit a three-pointer, and the Bobcats trailed by two, 21-19, with 1:15 remaining.<\/p>\nBriana Jackson’s<\/dfn> A layup with 35 seconds remaining gave ODU a 23-19 halftime lead that they could not hold in the second half.<\/p>\nYoung said the situation looked extraordinary even when ODU was leading 18-6.<\/p>\n
“It felt like we were never really together,” she said. “The attack wasn’t really committed. We had a really bad offensive night.<\/p>\n
‘The defense was just right, but the whole game went wrong’<\/p>\n
Milton Jones said it was a tough loss, but it was just one game and he hopes the team will recover on Saturday when the Monarchs host Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m.<\/p>\n
“Not all is lost,” she said. “You know, you set out to win every game, and we were able to do that in nine games.<\/p>\n
“Now we have another game ahead of us…and it’s the one we set our sights on winning.”<\/p>\n
ODU celebrates International Girls and Women with Sports Day on Saturday when Monarch hosts Chanticleers.<\/p>\n
ODU’s volleyball, lacrosse, field hockey and women’s soccer teams gather on the concourse of Chartway Arena after the game. Student-athletes will hand out team posters and sign autographs. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
