The women’s basketball race in the Golden West League didn’t turn out like Ocean View had hoped for on Wednesday night, but it turned out to be more tense at the top.<\/p>\n

Segerstrom recovered from a double-digit deficit to beat Ocean View 55-46 to tie for second place with three games remaining.<\/p>\n

Ocean View (18-7, 5-2 in the Golden West League) and Segerstrom (16-8, 5-2) may have needed each other’s help to challenge for the league title. But I got help from an unexpected source. Fourth-placed Westminster beat league leaders Godinez at home 60-51.<\/p>\n

As a result, the Seahawks still have a chance to control their own destiny and even tie for the top of the standings when they face Godinez on Friday (16-9, 6-1).<\/p>\n

Oceanview manager Ryan Hasegawa said, “What we think is our goal and what we consider a successful season is to win the league and be CIF.<\/p>\n

Ocean View, who got off to a good start from across the arc, led 21-10 after the first quarter. Sophomore guard Angelina her bud made her 3-pointer in the early game.<\/p>\n

Segerstrom dug the rest of the way defensively, forcing a turnover, leading to a fast-breaking opportunity, but limiting Ocean View’s chances on the offense. Junior wing Berliner Larrieu, junior forward Faith Ledesma and sophomore guard Claudia Solis each scored his two field goals in the second quarter as the Jaguars cut the deficit to 31-28. .<\/p>\n

Segerstrom’s stifling defense gave Ocean View 6 points in the third quarter. Sophomore guard Stephanie Valenciano finished the layup on contact at his 4:44 on the clock in the third quarter, giving the Jaguars his 36\u201335 lead.<\/p>\n

“They’re a good team,” Ledesma said of facing the Seahawks. \u201cThey beat us in overtime last time. We knew if we beat them, we could go to the CIF. We were finally successful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bud scored a game-high 18 points on Oceanview. Senior guard Haley Beh added 11 points and freshman guard Laniebe added 10 points. Senior forward Jaden Campuzano scored his five points.<\/p>\n

Valenciano is 14 points ahead of Segerstrom and 12 ahead of Solis. Ledesma scored his nine and junior guard Valeria Quero scored his five.<\/p>\n

Mr. Hasegawa says he wants his program to instill a culture of “family”, and he feels the team got the message. The results showed in his first season as head coach.<\/p>\n

“That’s the culture we want to bring,” Hasegawa said. “It’s all about family. \u2026 We get buy-in from all the varsity girls, so I think that’s what makes us successful and competitive.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the time, no matter what happens, we will fight together, win together, and learn together.\u201d<\/p>\n
