Because he followed sideline luminaries like Bill Parcells, John Madden, Hank Strahm, Georgia Allen and Marv Levy as highly honored coaches before him in the 2000s.

It was nothing more than a no-brainer when Dungey accepted an invitation to speak at the March for Life on the National Mall on Friday. It was followed by the podiums of lawmakers, anti-abortion extremists Randall Terry, and Donald Trump.

Indeed, when Helms resigned in 2001, as the great Washington Post political columnist David S. was a politician. Terry founded the anti-abortion organization Operation He Rescue. The organization displayed a “wanted” poster for Florida abortion doctor David Gunn at a summer rally in 1993, before Gunn was assassinated outside a Florida clinic after he was shot three times in the back. Distributed. And Trump did what anti-abortion Republican Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush feared because of the extremist undercurrent of the event.

Yet Dungey advanced his engagement in speech, using his athlete celebrity coupled with his religiosity as intolerance-themed deodorant.

Candace Buckner: Dana White’s nasty lesson in slapping

It came just days after a tweet by Dungey in which he was duly and wholesomely denounced, apologized and embarrassed to remove his words. It amplified the dangerous deceptions of reactionaries about the length of time they supposedly accepted their identity differences, and the need to stop them. It was meant to take away the necessities, even the necessities of children of color who needed the opportunity to explore their own history and let others learn from them. It was a slap in the face for being the first active NFL player to do so, lauded by the league since revealing that he was a member of the team.

Someone at NBC told me on Monday that Dungey apologized to the “Football Night in America” team he’s the face of. And the network reminded in a memo to staff: Our company is a long and proud advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and works hard to ensure that all employees are seen, recognized, recognized and respected. ”

I don’t know if the league did the same, or reacted to Colin Kaepernick’s protests as they did when players who didn’t stand for the anthem fined teams on the field. The league did not respond to my email requesting an explanation for Dungey’s association with the association.

Dungey posted his regrets Saturday before attending NBC’s playoff broadcast. I apologized, but not everyone saw it. So, I will reprint the words of apology here. As a Christian, I want to be a force of love for all. A force for healing and reconciliation, not for enmity. ”

He tweeted his ex’s Mekurpa on Wednesday. It read: “I saw the tweet [Tuesday] And I answered it the wrong way. But that didn’t stop Dungey from embracing the moment he stood before an anti-abortionist on a platform frequented by white supremacists and zealots. And from there he uses Buffalo Bills player Dumar, who is recovering after suffering a cardiac arrest during a game, as a kind of justification for overriding a woman’s right to choose abortion. I even found some bile to cite Hamlin’s recent story.

“People wanted to see their lives saved,” Dungey told the March for Life crowd, referring to Hamlin. Not only was he an outspoken opponent of same-sex marriage, he campaigned in Indiana when he was a Colts coach to gay people in general, including those who might struggle as professional athletes. I objected. He infamously said he wouldn’t let Michael Sam, the NFL’s first openly gay player, into his locker room.

This is a reminder that sports can be, and often will continue to be, the opposite factor that is admired.
