According to local police, the incident occurred late Tuesday night and the driver was a 28-year-old man named Chen who got into an altercation with hotel staff after he lost his laptop during his stay.
No one was injured in the incident, they said in a statement posted on their Weibo social media accounts, adding that Chen was being held in custody pending further investigation.
A hotel staff member told AFP the laptop had been stolen and was found outside the hotel.
The car apparently hit another set of doors before heading for the exit, but slammed into a door frame and came to a halt, causing its hazard lights to flash.
Onlookers and hotel staff yelled at the driver to get out of the car, slammed the car, and smashed the windows to try to retrieve the keys.
“Do you know what you did?” I hear them scream. “Are you crazy? Are you?”
According to booking.com, Jinling Purple Mountain Hotel Shanghai is a 4-star hotel with a ‘very good’ rating.
