The National Premier Soccer League has announced that the Iowa Raptors have joined the league as an expansion team.
The Cedar Rapids Club of Iowa will start playing this year.
NPSL Managing Director Cindy Spera said in a statement, “The Raptors have a history of success in their community and we are delighted to have them as our new Iowa team.” We are committed to this region of the country and are pleased to bring one of the region’s top brands to the NPSL Midwest region as a result.”
The club will be led by managing partner Bobby Hurwitz, general manager Gordy Garson and head coach Hewerton Moreira.
Hurwitz is a former Major Arena Soccer League player and managing partner of the Raptors since the club’s founding in 2019. He focuses on the player’s path between the academy and his senior team, along with his day-to-day operations.
Gerson has been GM since 2019. The Utica City FC forward is entering his 10th season with the MASL and ranks among the leaders in career goals. Gerson is focused both on scoring goals and helping the Raptors continue to grow and enter the newly established domestic league, providing a path for players in the academy.
Moreira enjoyed a 15-season career as a player, making 301 appearances, scoring 198 goals and providing 174 assists. He played for Utica City, Milwaukee Wave, San Diego Sockers, St. Louis He Ambush. He won his three league championships in his seven years with the Wave. Moreira is the head coach of Utica City and has similar experience with Ambush and Cedar as he has with the Rapids and Rampage.
Gerson said in a statement, “We feel we have brought an established organization that can compete for a national title.”
The Raptors also participate in M2 (men’s indoor), WPSL (women’s outdoor) and PASL (women’s indoor). The club runs a youth program called the Raptors Academy.
The home match will take place at Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids.
