Washington Considers Adding Lights to Local Soccer Fields

WASHINGTON, North Carolina (WNCT) — Authorities are considering adding lighting to some or all of the eight soccer fields at the Susie Gray McConnell Sports Complex.

Initial estimates for this project are approximately $520,000 to illuminate four fields and $820,000 to illuminate all eight fields. Mayor Jonathan Russell said those estimates were obtained months ago and current figures may be different. The city council on Monday gave the go-ahead to stakeholders to solicit bids on the project.

The city can use either its fund balance or remaining American Rescue Plan funds to pay for projects.

“These fields are now heavily utilized during the summer months,” said Russell. “Last fall, I think he had over 600 people in the Optimist Soccer League. With lights on those fields, all year round, after hours, or when times change, it’s a little easier. It will be ready for use.”

Russell said adding lighting would also be beneficial from an economic development standpoint. He said the city could host various tournaments and similar events if the field had lighting.

“The use has been proven and will allow[the field]to be used more fully throughout the year,” Russell said. “We are limited in our ability to light the field.”
