At a Virginia high school, two junior varsity girls’ basketball coaches lost their jobs after their assistant coach allegedly wore a suit to a game.
Portsmouth Public Schools has received a report from Nansemond River High School administration that a member of the coaching staff for Churchland High School’s junior varsity team “attended a game” on January 21, district spokesperson Lauren said. Nolasco said.
Churchland administrators investigated the incident and reported it to the Virginia High School League, the state’s sanctioning body for public high school games.
Nolasco said in a statement: “While we cannot discuss the details of the investigation as this is a private matter, we can confirm that Aalisha Boykins is no longer an employee of Portsmouth Public Schools.
Boykins, 22, was an assistant coach at Churchland accused of impersonating a student in a game against Nansemond River, according to WAVY, an NBC affiliate in Portsmouth. The actual player was unable to attend the game due to an out-of-town club tournament, her parents told the station.
Boykins was hired in August. Her last day at school was Wednesday, Nolasco said. The women’s basketball team’s head coach is no longer hired, Nolasco said.
It was not immediately clear how Boykins was cleared to play or how long she had been in the game. I didn’t.
Suffolk High School administrators did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.
After the incident, Churchland staff members met with the parents and players of the junior national team and national team. Nolasco said the group made the decision not to continue the basketball season.
“The rest of the team’s opponents and officials have been notified,” she said.
