Are you a football fan? Did you see Buffalo Bills safety Dumar Hamlin go into cardiac arrest on Monday after clashing in the first quarter of his NFL game against the Bills and Cincinnati Bengals? Did you?
His heartbeat was restored by medical personnel, but the 24-year-old Hamlin remains in critical condition and is flooded with support from athletes, celebrities and fans.
But Times Sports columnist Kurt Streeter writes that many of us who watch games often focus on them as entertainment while downplaying the risks inherent in the sport. Destruction on the field is “one of the reasons American football is so appealing,” he writes. “That’s why the highlights show is full of the most jarring and brutal hits.”
Streeter asks:
