San Antonio – 2022 was filled with special moments that will be remembered forever by San Antonio sports fans.

Teams and athletes at all levels of competition have brought home serious hardware. Some franchises have broken through and won their first championships, while some familiar faces have returned to the top of the mountain.

In celebration of 365 remarkable days, the KSAT 12 Sports team wants to take a look back at the 12 biggest sports headlines.

We start the list the same way we started the 2022 high school soccer season.

KSAT Pigskin Classic 2022

There were 3 good games with 6 programs with a total of 5 points, one of which went into extra time. Smithson Valley had an emotional 14-13 victory over Reagan for head coach Larry Hill, and new head coach Mark Soto edged Judson past former team Johnson in a 46-43 overtime shootout. 2 steals, an undefeated regular en route to his season, in a late 35-34 he beat No. 1 Brennan. His first KSAT Pigskin Classic was a huge success. We at his KSAT can’t wait to do it all again in 2023.

UTSA Women’s Soccer Wins C-USA Title

The Roadrunners helped prove San Antonio was the heart of football by winning its first Conference USA title. The No. 6 seed, his UTSA thrashed Florida Atlantic 3-2 in overtime in the championship game, fittingly capping his one of the most successful seasons in program history. They even got to celebrate with the soccer team on the Riverwalk!

XFL Returns

The XFL Brings Pro Football Back to Alamo City. Steelers legend Hines Ward will coach the San Antonio Bramas, one of three Texas-based teams in the newly formed eight-team league. This year we expect play to begin the week after the Super Bowl and the Alamodome will be packed!

D’HANIS SOFTBALL AND BASEBALL DOUBLE AGAIN

The city of D’Hanis is back in 2019, dominating the UIL Class 1A state titles in baseball and softball. Softball his team won his second title with his 6-2 win over Helmley in his game of the championship, and the baseball team outscored both opponents combined with his 20-0 won his third title. A fitting end to some notable careers for all seniors on both rosters.

O’Connor Softball Wins State Championship

The Panthers winning the UIL Class 6A state crown was pure magic. O’Connor found a way to win both games in the state tournament where he fell behind 3–0. Jada Munoz was at the center of both comebacks. In the semi-finals, he hit a home run in the bottom of the 4th inning when he won 7-5 against El Paso Americas, and in the final game, he hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 6th inning to tie the score. Game at 6-6. The inning continued, senior AJ Sanchez drew a bases-loaded bases to score the final run in a 7–6 win, and the Panthers stormed the field in celebration of their first state title.

Taylor Nunez wins gold

Simply put, Taylor Nunez set his truck on fire this past May. The Universal City Randolph freshman won his four gold medals at the UIL State Class 3A Athletics Championships. She started her conquest with her victory in the long jump, won the 100m state record she won in 11.59 seconds, won the gold medal again in the 200m, and finally won the low hawks 4x100m her won a gold medal in the relay. With her efforts, Randolph topped the team standings for the first time since her 2012.

Boerne’s incredible year

It wasn’t just the football team’s historic season. In 2022, Boerne his athletic overall has achieved remarkable success. The Greyhound football team set many school records and became the first Boerne team to win the state football title. They nearly finished an undefeated season, but settled in as UIL Class 4A State runners-up. Earlier this year, the men’s soccer team defeated Serena 2-1 to win the UIL Class 4A State Championship. Boerne’s tennis team finished runner-up in the state. So did the champion women’s cross-country team. The Charger Boys water polo team also competed in the inaugural UIL State Championship Game here in San Antonio, finishing runner-up. Both the Greyhounds and the Chargers sent men’s basketball teams to the Alamodome for the state tournament last March. As the calendar shifts to his 2023, the city of Boerne has much to celebrate.

Uvalde wins home opener in rally

Coyote left a lasting memory in the city of Uvalde. With the Robb Elementary tragedy still in the community’s memory, the football team united as he made his pass to the Eagles in the home opener 34-28. With 36.1 seconds left in his career, senior Jonathan Jimenez turned a play that went nowhere into a legendary moment, cutting down on the defensive grain with a 54-yard run that breathed new life into Uvalde. As the Coyotes celebrated an emotional victory in the Honey Bowl, quarterback Brody Kearns found Devon Franklin with a game-winning one-handed touchdown catch with just 12 seconds remaining.

San Antonio FC wins first USL title

San Antonio FC has had arguably the best season in the history of the USL Championship. The Alamo City club won the Copatejas, defeated Austin FC at the US Open, earned his champion’s shield in the regular season in record-breaking fashion, and won the Westerns his conference trophy for the first time in a 3–1 victory. won his USL Championship title. All Louisville City FC takes place within one calendar year. The SAFC certainly proved they were ‘mentality monsters’ and were able to celebrate in style with a River Walk Parade and a river dive.

UTSA, UIW and Trinity dominate

In 2022, all three of San Antonio’s college football powerhouses have left plenty of memories for local fans.

Head coach Jeff Traylor and the Roadrunners have proven their historic run in 2021 was no fluke. UTSA went undefeated in Conference USA play for the first time in program history, winning the C-USA title for the program’s second straight year as he defeated North Texas 48-27. Quarterback Frank Harris is the star of the show, announcing he’ll be back for another year.

Under head coach GJ Kinne in his first year, UIW boasted the highest-scoring offense in college football. The Cardinals finished his season as a regular Southland Conference champion with an overall record of 10 wins and 1 loss. They then went on to win his two FCS playoff games at Furman and Sacramento State in thrilling fashion before exiting the tournament in a hard-fought loss to his nine-time FCS champion North Dakota State. bottom.

Finally, head coach Jarhem Urban led Trinity to an undefeated regular season with the program’s first Division III playoff victory in 20 years, a 14–7 come-from-behind victory over Hardin Simmons. I was lucky enough to represent all three teams throughout the rest of the historic season. Their combined record was 34-6.

Manu Ginobili inducted into Hall of Fame

The second member of the Spurs’ ‘Big 3’ has been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame: Manu Ginobili. became a player. Ginobili was the first Argentinian to play in his NBA and is famous for winning an Olympic gold medal for Argentina in 2004. He won his four NBA titles in his 16-year career with the Spurs. Spurs release Josh Primo

Finally, we must touch on the drama surrounding the Spurs and Joshua Primo.

The Spurs abruptly released the Primo on October 28, removing all gear from the team store with little explanation. The next day, reports alleged Primo was exposed to multiple women in various cities. Former Spurs psychologist Dr. Hilary Corten sued Primo for an obscene revelation and the Spurs for helping cover it up. She held a press conference with attorney Tony Busby to file a lawsuit in Bexar County. The parties to the dispute agreed to a settlement in November.
