US Football Now Accepting Nominations for 2023 Werner Flicker Builder Award and First Annual Carla Overbeck Leadership Award

Chicago (January 27, 2023) – The 2023 US Soccer Werner Flicker Builder Award is named after the late US Soccer President Werner Flicker. A cup winner and Olympic gold medalist, she is known not only for her contributions on the field, but also for her leadership off the field.

Werner Flicker Award

Created in 2002, the Werner Flicker Award is the highest honor American football can bestow on an individual. Flickr is widely known for having served as president of football in the United States from 1984 until 1990, when he held his FIFA World Cup in the United States. Born in Yugoslavia and raised in Austria, he spent his adulthood in Pennsylvania and from 1954 he moved to Philadelphia until 1969. Was a member of his team at the 1964 US Olympics.

Fricker served as President of United States Soccer from 1984 to 1990 and was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, New York in 1992. His son Werner Jr. accepted the award on his behalf.

To be nominated for the Werner Flicker Prize, the following criteria must be met:

  • The nominees have dedicated more than 20 years of service to the sport of football.
  • For athletes, a career as an athlete counts toward 20 years of service, but candidates must have contributed to the sport in another capacity.
  • Service is outstanding and sets the candidate apart from others serving in the same capacity.
  • Candidates have created/developed programs that outlast their active involvement in sports.
  • The nominee’s work has had a clear impact on the development of the sport at the national level.
  • The nominator is alive at the time of nomination.

CARLA OVERBECK LEADERSHIP AWARD

The inaugural Karla Overbeck Leadership Award recognizes individuals who demonstrate a unique ability to lead others, benefit others outside their organization, and contribute to the success of initiatives that emphasize collaboration within and between leadership. Awarded.

As captain of the USWNT (1993-2000), Overbeck led the 1996 gold medal Olympic team and the 1999 World Cup championship team. Her leadership has been highly regarded by her former teammates and coaches, and she continues to have over 30 years of experience as a college coach at Duke University. She is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

To be considered for the Karla Overbeck Leadership Award, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Individuals actively involved in US football (i.e. affiliated with a member of an organization).
  • Demonstrates a unique ability to motivate and guide others, which contributes to the effective and efficient functioning of the organization and the landscape as a whole.
  • We are willing to “carry the water cooler,” lead by example, and do the little things that foster an environment of trust and trust.
  • Easily adapts and innovates to new situations. It doesn’t depend on how things have always been done.
  • Create a culture of respect that mentors, nurtures, and fosters an atmosphere conducive to achievement for teammates and peers, especially those in roles with fewer tenures.
  • Contribute to the success of initiatives that benefit people outside your own organization, or focus on collaboration within and between members.

The Werner Fricker Taskforce will review both award nominations and select the respective winners at the 2023 Annual Meeting, March 16-19, 2023 in San Diego, California. Task Force members are appointed by the President of US Soccer and confirmed by the US Soccer Board. The nominees are made up of representatives from various football communities across the United States and past winners.

The nomination process is annual and open to all. A maximum of one award will be awarded each year. However, the committee is not required to present the award each year.
