CARBONDALE, Illinois — Two students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale — freshmen transfer on their second day on campus and juniors with traditional ties to the university — each a Saluki with Illinois I won free tuition for the spring semester during a men’s basketball game. January 14th.
Briana Claypool, an aviation and management major at the Aviation School from Cary, Illinois, and Cole Rushing, an accounting and finance major at the Business Analytics School from Goreville, Illinois, each meet for a semester on Saturday nights. won free tuition. at the Bantera Center. Saluki beat Illinois State, she went 69-57.
Claypool, who attended his first Saluki match, said: “This is such a blessing that it seems unreal.”
Claypool transferred to SIU from McHenry County College in Crystal Lake. What drew her to the college, she said, was its aviation program and “the nature around it.”
“SIU is a beautiful campus,” she said.
Meanwhile, Rushing, a sprinter for the Saluki men’s track and field team, has participated in many SIU events over the years. He will come to SIU in the fall of 2021 and academically he is in his third year, but as an athlete he is classified as a sophomore.

He has attended career fairs, Saluki fan events, and numerous College of Business and Analytics events. Rushing is active in several registered student organizations, including the Accounting Society, Beta Alpha Psi, and the Business Leadership Council. He will be attending a summer internship at an accounting firm in St. Louis this summer and will complete his MBA after completing his undergraduate studies.
“I am so grateful and proud to be a Saluki to have received this scholarship,” said Rushing, whose parents, Michele and Theron, and sister, Sydney, are all SIU alumni.
The first-generation college graduate in her family, Michele Rushing is a three-degree graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance and a Master’s degree in Business Administration. She also retired as Assistant Dean of her current College of Agricultural Biophysical Sciences after nearly 30 years in various positions at SIU. She is currently working as a special assistant at the Student Recreation Center.
Michele Rushing said she was surprised to win a traditional scholarship for her son. I mentioned that I have five brothers and sisters who are alumni and five nieces and nephews who are either attending or graduated from college.
“SIU Carbondale has been good for my family,” said Michele Rushing. “Your college education experience is what you make it, and SIU has a lot to offer attendees. I look forward to my grandchildren joining SIU.”
The free tuition draw was part of the Saluki Legacy and Student Drawing promotion, open to all students and organized by Dawg Pound, a registered student organization supporting Saluki athletics. The January 14th draw was open to all students.
There will be another draw open to all students on February 4, when the Saluki women’s basketball team will host Missouri Valley Conference foes Valparaiso in a “Maroon Out” game for fans. The goal for that game is to have 1,000 students participate, said Dylan Chambers, president of his Dawg Pound, a sports management major in Metropolis, Illinois.
