It’s been a tradition for Archbishop Carroll and Cardinal O’Hara to play on a very difficult non-league schedule, and this season is no exception.
The young Lions are off to a 7-2 start after losing two of their first three games. They have impressive wins over South Bronx Prep, Notre Dame Academy and West Chester Rustin. O’Hara extended his sixth straight win by defeating George School (Newtown) at the Blue Star Invitational Sunday 46-28.
Junior guard Joanie Quinn said after the Lions win over Notre Dame in December, “We still have a lot of work to do to do better, but I know everyone on the team has the same focus. “We have to bring energy to every match.”
Two-time PIAA Class 5A champions, the incumbent four new starters have so far kicked the label of “rebuilding.” Now a Class 6A program, Lions just got a new coat of paint and is dangerous in every way. Sophomore Molly Lulo is the star, but Quinn and her fellow her juniors Greta Miller and Carly Coleman have provided a lot of support.
Carol’s schedule is daunting to say the least. According to MaxPreps, the Patriots faced his five nationally-ranked opponents in his first ten games. Their record of 3 wins and 7 losses is misleading.
Wilson sisters Taylor (senior) and Brooke (junior) are growing up alongside freshman Alexis Evers. It’s only a matter of time before the Patriots make a sustained run, and that could cost them Catholic League rivals.
A rematch of last year’s Catholic League final between the Lions and Patriots will take place in O’Hara on Thursday, January 26.
Two programs scheduled after O’Hara and Carroll are Archbishop Wood and Lansdale Catholicism. The Vikings (5-2) are perennial favorites in the PCL, so it’s no surprise that they’re title contenders once again. And the Crusaders (7-1) are the team that gets a lot of talk. The runners-up to his PIAA Class 4A title last March, they are averaging over 60 points per game led by Gabby Casey. The veteran forward and Saint Joseph’s commitment to Neumann last week saw him score 40 points in his 76–54 victory over Goretti.

Peyton Berger has contributed a lot to Ridley during his national team career. And as her workload has increased this season, so has her production on the floor.
“She does everything for us,” said coach Lo Falcone after last week’s home defeat to Radnor.
Berger can run points, drive to baskets, grab boards, and defend. She brings senior experience with forward Abi, her Hinchey, and guard Kyra, who has played well with her Raiders (3-7) on Green.
The first month is a work in progress. Ridley was devastated when junior starters Marina Stewart and Kailyn Bell suffered long-term injuries.
Despite losing two key starters, the Green Raiders are not far from figuring things out.
“We work hard and we know we have talent,” said Falcone. “We have to find ways to reduce mistakes.”
