MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Adjla Tomljanovic, who defeated Serena Williams in last year’s US Open finale, and 11th seed Paula Vadosa at Melbourne Park withdrew from Saturday’s Australian Open due to injury.

Tomljanovic is dealing with a sore knee that kept him out of this month’s United Cup. Badosa has a sore thigh.

Their exits will allow Leoria Janjan and Laura Pigosi (the two players who lost in the qualifiers) to advance to the main draw of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, which starts Monday (Sunday night EST).

Tomljanoviccurrently ranked number 35, wrote on Twitter:

She reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2022. Her 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-1 victory over Williams — Williams announced she was ready to move away from her before play began at Flushing Meadows. Her playing career — making Tomljanovic the first in New York to reach her fourth round.

Second-ranked Badosa withdrew from the semi-finals after suffering a thigh injury at this week’s Adelaide internationals.
