The first two weeks of the new year were exciting for the RISD national team.

Heading into the spring semester, head to Lake Highlands High School on January 3 for an epic matchup between the No. 1 Wildcats and No. 10 Eagles men’s basketball teams.

The atmosphere at the pre-informed sold-out gym was electrifying as WFAA prepared a live broadcast to reboot the “Tuesday Night Hoops” series.

The Wildcats came out strong, leading 22-11 in the first quarter. However, the Eagles bounced back and he lost 26-22 in the first half. Halftime looked like all the Wildcats needed to regroup and dominate the final two quarters, winning 69–47.

Also on January 3, Berkner Boys Basketball played at home against the Jesuits. The Rams hung tough the entire game, but ended up losing to the Rangers 63-53 in a tough district loss.

The Berkner Women’s Basketball team faced the Lake Highlands on January 3rd in a very close game with the Lady Wildcats winning 57-52. Wrapping up the district basketball game on January 3, the Lady Eagles head to Richardson High School where the Irving McArthur beat her 39-32.

On Friday, January 6th, the Lady Wildcats held their first district match against the Lady Mustangs. Both teams started strong and tied the first quarter at 13, but Pierce pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 50-34.

In another district matchup, Berkner hosted the RHS. The Lady Eagles held their lead for the entire game and won 54-36.

Head to Richardson High School with the Eagles to watch the boys’ basketball team take on Irving High School. Support from the student section, the Egrets, and the RHS cheer team provided the Eagles with the motivation to take another district victory over the Tigers, where he scored 58-48.

District basketball concludes the first week of 2023. We make our way to Pierce where they host the Lake Highland Wildcats. The Wildcats started strong and finished strong as well, winning 51-37 in Coach Jodafield’s 200.th career victory.

The Lake Highland women’s and men’s wrestling teams competed in the Frisco High Duels on the first weekend of 2023.

LHHS Seniors Fernanda Lopez, Kathryn Salinas and Jr. Sarah Connor all won 5-0 during the competition. Fernanda Lopez was named “Most Outstanding Wrestler”. She also happens to be the number one ranked wrestler in the country and was Lake Highland’s Homecoming Queen last fall!

Continuing #RISDGreatness on the first Saturday of the new year, the Lady Eagles soccer team took on the top-ranked teams through DFW in the final game of the Dallas Champions Tournament to claim the gold medal trophy! This is a non-district matchup. But it certainly shined a light on a promising season for the Eagles!

Starting in the second week of the new year, basketball takes center stage with surprising victories and defeats and the start of football’s district play.

Bright and early January 10, the Richardson Eagles men’s basketball team, football team, and women’s basketball team headed to feeder school at the elementary school to help with the car pool line, and then to the elementary school and school for the girls’ basketball game later in the day. The Lady Eagles hosted the Lady Mustangs later that night and their momentum was unwavering with a 64-19 victory. The Burkner Lady Rams hosted Irving MacArthur in a tough district match, losing 40-24 to the Cardinals, while the Lake Highlands Lady Wildcats traveled to Irving High and defeated the Tigers, 54-29.

Also at Irving High, the Berkner men’s basketball team put in a strong performance against the Tigers, losing the district game 57-51.

Continuing the battle against the Irving team, jump to Lake Highlands where the men’s basketball team overwhelmed Irving Nimitz 83-34. Pierce Mustangs Irving beat his MacArthur 63-62 to win the district title. Congratulations Wildcats and Mustangs!

January 10th was also the day we got our first glimpse of the youth soccer district play within the RISD. The Richardson Eagles played for Irving his Nimitz, Pierce his Mustangs at home against the Jesuit Rangers, and Berkner his Rams played for Irving his MacArthur. All three games ended in a draw, with the Eagles scoring 3, the Mustangs scoring 0 and Berkner scoring 1.

On Wednesday, January 11, the Richardson Eagles wrestling team competed at Hillcrest High School, winning against Adamson but losing to Hillcrest by the end of the night. Go for it, Eagles!

Friday the 13thth arrived and the Lake Highlands Lady Wildcats started the night with a great effort against Highland Park before losing to the Scotts 55-39.

The Lady Mustangs competed in Irving MacArthur and lost the nail biting 41-39 while the Berkner Lady Rams lost to Irving Nimitz. The Richardson Lady Eagles turned the district’s fortunes around with a dominant performance over Irving 61-33. Great work by all 4 teams! #RISDBelieves

Closing Friday the 13ththwe headed to Richardson High School where the boys battled the Jesuit Rangers, leading 74-57 and finishing 3rd in the district 7-6A.

As we round up the last two weeks of RISD Athletics, we highlight the cheerleaders of Pierce Mustang and Berkner Lam at the UIL State Championships on Saturday, January 14th.
