Two competing Texas high schools have launched racial discrimination investigations at basketball games where fans allegedly made monkey noises at players of color and wore offensive costumes.
In a showdown Friday clip obtained by The Daily Beast, players from Amarillo’s River Road High School can be seen lining up shots from the free throw line. Dalhart High School’s student section then erupts with noise, including loud monkey hooting.
“I think the student section is a great opportunity for students to get involved.
Pierce did not identify the player at the free-throw line, but said he was “a man of color.”

A source in the River Road community who told The Daily Beast said Dalhart students were calling Friday’s game “Thug night” and wearing aggressive outfits in the stands.
The outlet got a photo of the student section of Dalhart, showing the teenager with a fake face tattoo and wearing a backward-facing hat, sunglasses, durag, or a tight-fitting hat associated with the black community.
A since-deleted photo from Dalhart High School’s Facebook page reads, “Looking a little ‘thug’ here tonight! ‘ was said to have been captioned.
Dalhart Independent School District Superintendent Jeff Byrd confirmed the incident in a press release Monday.
“The Dalhart ISD will not tolerate racist or discriminatory behavior,” he wrote.
“It is the district’s expectation that all students, including student-athletes, communicate with their opponents and other district peers in a respectful manner. need to do it.”
Byrd also said administrators are reviewing game footage and social media posts and interviewing students and adults who participated.
“Misconduct by students or staff will be dealt with promptly in accordance with Board policy and applicable codes of conduct,” Byrd asserted.
In a statement to The Daily Beast, River Road Superintendent Richard Kelley said the school district is “concerned” about the impact of the incident on students.
“Both sides are currently investigating the situation and will continue to work towards a resolution. I am very proud of how the athletes and coaches handled a very tense situation,” he said. Told.
