Texas has fired basketball coach Chris Beard. Arrested for third-degree assault Suspected of strangling, biting, and assaulting his fiancé at home.
“The University of Texas has parted ways with Chris Beard,” Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte said in a statement. I have informed Mr Beard of our decision to terminate him with immediate effect.”
Beard was fired for good reason, sources told CBS Sports. As such, he is not entitled to any salary or buyout money from his seven-year, $35 million contract signed with the Longhorns ahead of the 2021-22 season. His contract was to last until 2028.
Texas suspended Beard indefinitely on December 12. “The university takes seriously the issue of interpersonal violence involving members of the community,” UT said in a Dec. 12 statement.
Beard’s fiancée, Randy Triew, said as part of his arrest statement that Beard “choked me, threw me out of bed, bit me, bruised me all over my leg, threw me around and drove me crazy.” I told the police that night. Report.
11 days later, on December 23rd, Trieu retracted her original statementThrough her attorney, Trieu claimed to have initiated the “struggle”. He said he did not tell the police otherwise, despite what was written in the document. Trieu did not dispute that Beard had acted in self-defense that night.
Police documented visible wounds and signs of struggle on Trieu’s body when they interviewed her on December 12. Her arrest report states that Trieu told Austin police, “I couldn’t breathe. He was probably breathing for five seconds.”
Retracting her statement, Trieu said, “It was never my intention to arrest or prosecute him.
As of Thursday, the felony charges against Beard have not been dropped by the Austin, Texas district attorney’s office. Beard has an Emergency Protection Order valid until at least February 10, 2023. This order prevents him from being within 200 yards of him from his home or his fiancée.
Beard’s next court date is scheduled for January 18th.
Texas alumnus Beard was hired in a big way in April 2021 after five successful seasons at Texas Tech. No. 6 Texas is 12-2 with five wins in his six games under his interim coach Rodney Terry since Beard’s suspension. The Longhorns play at Oklahoma State University on Saturday.
