Devin Haney admitted that Vasily Lomachenko reigned as the division’s top dog before establishing himself as the man to beat at 135 pounds.
Still, even though the Ukrainian held the majority of the lightweight title firmly at one point, Haney believed he could take him away.
Ultimately, Lomachenko chose not to face the up-and-coming star instead of a unification match against Teofimo Lopez, despite having been in a mandatory position a few years earlier.
Fast forward just a few years later and the two have come full circle despite being in completely different positions of power. is about to challenge him for the undisputed throne.
A target date sometime in late May has emerged as an unofficial, but likely scenario. I think. And while Haney enters the match as a wholesome favorite, the talkative trainer doesn’t believe he has the requisite ability to get the job done.

After spending a long time supporting his homeland in the ongoing Russian invasion, the 34-year-old returned to the ring in October against highly ranked Jamaine Ortiz.
Despite being considered a big favorite, Lomachenko (17-2, 11 KOs) struggled hard to emerge victorious that night by unanimous decision. Haney, meanwhile, spent 2022 ending an ongoing beef with George Kambosos Jr.
The flamboyant American holds a perfect and dominant record, but Lopez Sr. is unimpressed by his overall skill. If not, the 24-year-old Lomachenko’s refusal to sit punches and produce more on the offensive side will lead to his downfall.
