The women’s soccer race in the Valley Oak League just got a lot more interesting.

The Sierras began the second half of their league schedule by avenging one of their previous defeats on Monday, handing Oakdale their first loss of the season 4-1, on the road behind two goals from Haley Cruz.

Every team in VOL suffered at least one loss, with Manteca handing East Union a 1-0 decision.

After missing scoring chances in two games last week, Sierra (2-2-2 VOL, 9-6-2 overall) is down to Oakdale (3-1-2, 11-1-2).

Jocelin Roa added 1 goal and 1 assist to the Timberwolves offense. Weizemin Khan scored and provided the assist for Presley Perez. Sierra framed him 9 out of 14 shots. Anika Biel, on the other hand, recorded his eight saves.

Next to the Twowolves is Kimball at home on Wednesday.

Women’s soccer

Lathrop 9, Johansen 1

Contending for one of the Western Athletic Conference’s three playoff spots, Lathrop (5-3-3, 8-8-3) took two wins in three days against a winless Johansen.

Elisabeth Enriquez scored a hat-trick in Monday’s match. Morgan Penco and Eliana Fernandez each scored two points, while Janessa Ward and Jasmine Ponce each scored one.

Lathrop travels to Manteca on Friday for the annual Kicking for a Cure non-league contest. Next week, Sparta wraps up his WAC schedule with Los Banos and Mountain House.

Ripon Christian 2, Orestimba 0

The Knights (6-0-2 overall, 12-2-3) handled on-the-go business to maintain their lead in the Southern Athletic League.

Sophomores Addison de Jong and Anneke Dito scored goals and freshman Alana Blanco provided both assists.

women’s basketball

Lathrop 62, Ceres 29

The WAC-leading Spartans (8-0, 15-6) defensively crushed the visiting Bulldogs (1-7, 4-16) after leading 15-11 at the end of the first quarter. I held it down to single digits each round. Last 3 periods.

Lathrop blew it in the second quarter at 18-4. Ten of the 12 Spartans scored, led by Sanaa Sunnah’s 18 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds.

Marianna Delgado had nine points, four rebounds and two blocks. Alaba Olaleye (8 rebounds, 2 blocks) and Tatiana Lowery each scored 8 points. The reserves had to play the final 1½ quarters. Backup point guard Dana Mandanus had seven assists, four points and three rebounds. Sierra Adams got 4 points and she chipped on 5 boards.

Marissa Renteria scored nine points on Ceres’ pace.

JV women’s soccer

Sierra 2, Oakdale 0

Peyton Duarte and Jessica Miranda scored two goals as the Timberwolves improved to 6-0 in the Valley Oak League.

JV Women’s Basketball

Lathrop 39, Ceres 25

The Spartans took an early 12-5 lead and continued to visit Ceres to score in single digits each quarter.

Kirat Sidhu led the attack with 18 points while Osen Ughiyobo had 9 points.

Frosh Women’s Basketball

Ceres 26, Lathrop 23

After trailing 24-16 to start the fourth quarter, Tatiana Lopez compiled Lathrop’s 14 points short of a late comeback.
