Mason — Taylor Cook is in the early stages of his varsity basketball career.
But St. John’s coach Joe Foster believes the sophomore forward/guard is on the cusp of his second season with the national team.
Cook stepped up to show off some big plays on Friday, helping the Red Wings edge Mason to a 36-31 CAAC Red win
Cook finished with 9 points and scored 4 points in the final 1:01 to help St. John’s hold on to victory. She scored the final points of the game after Mason made two free throws from Jocelyn Reiter within one point with 1 minute and 57 seconds remaining.
“She’s been having a year,” Foster said of Cook. “She’s kind of a garbage player, she does everything other people don’t do. She just sticks her nose in one spot and it’s a lot of fun to watch her play.”
Jocelyn Kotowicz scored a team-leading 14 goals for St. John’s (5-3, 2-1).
Ashlyn Putnam scored a game-high 17 points, while Joclin Shattuck scored 10 to lead Mason (3-4, 1-2).

Lansing Catholic, 66, Charlotte, 28
CHARLOTTE — Leah Richards scored 13 points and Tessa Law added 11 points to help the Cougars stay undefeated in CAAC White’s play. FOWLERVILLE — Isabel Lind led the Vikings with 15 points and 6 steals in CAAC Red’s victory over Fowlerville. POTTERVILLE — An 11-3 run in the first quarter gave the Vikings a non-league home victory over Webberville. Cary Bush led all scorers with 24 points, Emily Cates scored 16, and Kira Marciniak scored Potterville (7-2) with his 8 points.
