It’s no exaggeration to say that the St. John Bosco basketball team made history in Santa Ana on Friday night.
The Monarchs have not lost a Trinity League basketball game at home since Martell Day opened the Meruelo Athletic Center in 2006-07. Once Luke Burnett’s three-point attempt went off the rim at the buzzer, St. John Bosco began celebrating his 67–64 win.
“I feel great,” said St. John Bosco guard Jack Turner, who scored 15 points on two free throws with 15.9 seconds remaining. “I am delighted to be part of the team that makes it happen.”
In his 41st season, Martell-Day coach Gary McKnight is the all-time winningest coach in California with 1,227 wins and 130 losses. St. John Bosco’s Matt Dunn his coach now has beaten McKnight his team five times, more than any other coach.
“Our players bailed us out,” Dunn said.
With 1:56 remaining, a technical foul was called on the assistant coach of St. John Bosco, almost turning the game around for the Monarchs (13-3, 1-1). Martelday hit his fourth straight free throw to make it 63-61.
St. John Bosco sophomores Elsie Harrington and Cade Bonham excelled, scoring 21 and 17 points respectively. The Braves improved him to 16-3 overall and 2-0 in the league.
“I thought we were in the fog for the first half,” Dunn said. “They did so many things and confused us.”
A group of Mater Dei freshmen spent most of the night. Freshman Luke Burnett scored 11 of 17 points in the second quarter to help the Monarchs open a 37-30 halftime lead. Senior Zach Davidson scored 16 points.
A big contributor to St. John Bosco was 6’9″ center Xingyi Lee. And then there was Turner, who calmly and confidently made two free throws to give the Braves a bit of leeway.
“I was in rhythm,” Turner said.
Asked what it means to beat Mattel Day on home court, Dunn said: “It means we’re number one in the Trinity League. It’s very difficult to win away in this league. A great win against a great program. am.”
This weekend, the premier matchup could reveal a lot about potential teams in the Southern Section Open Division playoffs.
No. 2 Torrance Bishop Montgomery (18-0) takes on No. 1 Studio City Harvard-Westlake (17-1) at Redondo Union on Saturday. At Cerritos University, the No. 3 Corona Centennials (13-3) take on the No. 8 Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (11-6). No. 6 Chatsworth Sierra Canyon (14-3) takes on Georgia Wheeler (8-4) at the Galen Center.
The Mission League kicked off Friday night with Bronnie James scoring 20 points in Sierra Canyon’s 80-47 victory over the West Hills Chaminade. Harvard-Westlake beat Mission Hills Bishop He beat Allemany 77–47 with Jacob Huggins scoring his 18 points. Notre Dame beat Loyola his 66–44 with Caleb Foster scoring his 21st. La Canada St Francis defeated Encino Crespi 48-42. Jackson Mosley scored 21 points in the win.
In the big game of the Crestview League, the Santa Ana Foothills (17-1) beat Anaheim Canyon 56-53.
