Montville — St. Bernard’s youth soccer team is one of only 25 high school teams in the nation to have won the United Soccer Coach’s Platinum Team Ethics Award.
The Saints earned the honor by completing the 2022 season without receiving a yellow or red card. Having coached the team for the past 13 seasons, Joe Partill was also named Class S Boys Soccer Coach of the Year by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association.
“Joe Partile is a quiet, steady force whose voice is respected on the field,” said St. Bernard Athletic manager Sue Griffin. His expectations of his players are unwavering, but Joe teaches his team more than football.
“The greatest trait he consistently models is humility. This is one of the values of our Xaverian heritage. The combination of humility and excellence is a powerful one.”
Only 135 fall season boys and girls teams nationwide won either the Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze version of the High School Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award. , as reflected in the number of yellow warning cards or red ejection cards, which are indicated by referees throughout the season based on the number of cards accumulated divided by the number of games played.
