Why the Spurs Can Cover the Spread

San Antonio is firmly in ‘tank mode’ as it holds the fourth worst record in the entire league. That said, the Spurs have faced the Grizzlies in both previous matchups and have a great chance to cover the big road tonight thanks to their unique offense. The Spurs are 23rd in scoring ( 112 PPG), but is sixth in paint (54.6 PPG). This is largely thanks to their rebounding ability offensively as San Antonio ranks him #8 offensively in his rebounding (11.9 ORPG). They also rank third in assists (27 APG) and do a great job sharing the ball.

The Spurs may be missing two key scorers tonight as well, with Devin Vassell absent while Keldon-Johnson is listed as suspect. ‘s Torre Jones held the key to the offense. He put in an impressive performance Monday against Memphis, scoring 18 points and his seven assists. It just continues a stretch of his recent strong game. Over the last four games, Jones averaged 18.8 PPG and his 5.3 APG. Whether Johnson plays or not, Jones is likely to play a big role and is a big reason why he can cover big spreads.

Faced with one of the best interior teams in the league, the Spurs need a strong night from the big guys if they want to cover. Zach Collins and Jakob Poeltl combined for 22 points and 13 rebounds in 50 minutes on Monday. have averaged 12.4 PPG and 5.4 RPG over their last 5 matches, while Poeltl has averaged 9.0 PPG and 10.5 RPG. Memphis has one of the best internal defenses he has in the NBA. That means any chance the Spurs cover could be on their big shoulders.

Why the Grizzlies Can Cover Spreads

Memphis is currently the hottest team in the league with a league-best seven-game winning streak. The biggest reason for their recent success is their powerful attacks. Memphis has averaged 121.6 PPG on their recent winning streak, and he currently ranks eighth overall for the season (116.4 PPG). They dominate the lowdown, ranking top in both points in paint (58.8 PPG) and rebounds (59.3 RPG). Memphis also has a top 1o defense allowing just 111.3 PPG.

The Grizzlies are on track with their starting five finally healthy, led by point guard Jamorant. Morant averaged 28.2 PPG and he averaged 8.8 APG on seven straight wins. He has shot 55% of his shots from the floor over the span and continues to put in the numbers despite playing just 32.3 minutes per game. This is on par with Ja’s course averaging 27.2 PPG and his 8.0 APG this season. Morant was absent from Monday’s game but had a good run against the Spurs early in the season. With the win, Morant scored 32 points on 14/25 shooting. With Ja back in action, the Grizzlies have a great chance to finally cover for a 0-2 team against the spread this season.

Perhaps the biggest X-factor in their ability tonight is Jaren Jackson Jr’s play. The up-and-coming big man ranks second on the team in scoring during a winning streak, averaging 18.4 PPG. He averaged his 3 hits of 1.6 over the span and shot 42% of his shots over the arc. However, his maximum impact is lower. Jackson is doing well in his RPG, averaging 7.1, but he’s also strong on defense. During the streak, he blocked his 3.9 shots per game.
