SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs are set to break the NBA’s single-game attendance record on Friday night when they host the Golden State Warriors.
The Spurs announced Wednesday that they have sold 63,592 tickets for the game at the Alamodome, San Antonio’s former home. With his room ticket standing, the Spurs could hold about 68,000 people.
Either way, they are confident of breaking a record that has stood for nearly 25 years. On March 27, 1998, at the Georgia Dome to watch Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls take on the Atlanta Hawks, the largest crowd (measured by tickets handed out) for his NBA regular season game was 62,046 people.
The largest crowd in league history was 108,713 at the 2010 All-Star Game at the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.
Outside of that All-Star Game, Friday’s matchup will be the fourth NBA game to record over 50,000 attendance.
Two of them took place at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. For the Detroit Pistons, on February 14, 1987 against Philadelphia he drew 52,745, and on January 29, 1988 against Boston he drew a crowd of 61,983. The record was not broken. Until the game at the Georgia Dome in 1998.
The Alamodome record for an NBA game is 39,554 on June 18, 1999, when New York visited San Antonio for Game 2 of that year’s NBA Finals.
The Spurs announced the record in typical low-key fashion for the franchise. A press release was circulated and simply read “63,592”. From 1993 he played at the Alamodome until 2002 before they moved to their current arena.
