January 6 — JAY — The first quarter was an accurate indicator that Spruce Mountain was well on its way to a quick and decisive win.
Phoenix took a nearly two-dozen points lead at the end of the first quarter, culminating in a 70-31 win over Winthrop in Thursday night’s MVC Boys’ Basketball game at The Nest.
The advantage was 25 to 3 after just eight minutes.
Spruce Mountain coach Scott Bessie said Thursday night’s win over Boothbay, two days before Phoenix faces Winthrop, was a boost for his Phoenix after losing to Dilligo last week.
“I thought Boothbay was a good team,” Bessie said. “It was the best game of the season against Boothbay….Dilligo was before that, so I thought it was the ‘right’ game to play against a good team like Boothbay. I think you are in the right direction.
“Everyone is starting to play better little by little. We played really, really well. We executed a very good game plan against a very well coached team. It’s a program we’re proud of. It was a good night for us.”
The Spruce Mountains (6-1) also dominated the second quarter, beating the Ramblers (3-6) from the perimeter and inside the key to take a 44-13 lead at halftime. Jr. His guard Ian York plagued Winthrop from the perimeter and made some productive moves to his game-best 20-point tune before suffering a head injury with just seconds left in the first half. ended the game.
However, York was back on the court practicing halftime with the rest of the Phoenix.
“It hurts, but I’m fine,” he said. “I’m fine. I have a Shiner on my head, but it’s a battle wound.”
York scored all 20 points in the first half, including dropping three 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Jace Bessie added his 19 points and Elie Timmler scored his 17 points and he was 7-for-5 at the free-throw line.
“I’m pretty confident in the next game,” Yorke said. “(Winthrop) has gone through it. They’ve probably been sluggish in their program, but that’s fine. We know they’ll be better in the years to come.”
York pointed out that Phoenix is now running off after a slow start to the season.
“We played pretty badly at the beginning of the season, but I think we’re really into it. He said, ‘That Diligo loss was definitely needed (as a wake-up call).'”
The Ramblers, currently on a five-game losing streak, struggled on offense throughout the game. Cole Bird scored his six of his eight points in the first half, a team-high, while Braden his Branagan scored all seven of his goals in the second half.
The third quarter was much the same, with Phoenix firmly in control as they took a 63-17 advantage heading into the fourth.
Phoenix slowed the game down to a walk late in the fourth to eat up time with endless passes and choice shots.
