White Bear Lake, Minnesota — “We start by crossing our fingers,” says Tad Wilson, director of operations for Bally Sports. This is because with all the equipment used to broadcast outdoor games in the dead of winter in Minnesota, the weather can sometimes do quite a trick.
But preparation is key. According to Wilson, everything from the heated blanket placed around his lens on the camera, to the scissor heater on his lift his block, to allowing staff to take turns warming him up. Part of his Day rendition of Hockey in Minnesota.
As one of Minnesota’s premier hockey events and a showcase for Bally Sports itself, Wilson says the event is worth about 11 months of planning.
“It’s a great celebration and we call it the Super Bowl,” Wilson said. I think it’s their Super Bowl. Everyone’s event.”
