For Windward’s Sky Belker, it’s not Juju. No problem.
Sky Belker was left behind when Juju Watkins left for Sierra Canyon last season. She passed from her first point at her guard to becoming one of her top scoring threats in women’s basketball in Southern California.
She delivered again and again on Tuesday night, scoring a career-high 39 points to lead Windward to a 73-62 win over Brentwood in the Gold Coast League first place play-off. Belker showed he could only make two 3s and go to the hoop if needed.
“The lane just opened,” she said.
Heading to Princeton, averaging 23 points, Belker is doing whatever new coach Jerika Williams asks her to do.
“She’s special,” Williams said.
Brentwood fell to 17-4 and 3-1. Windward improved his 14-5 and he 4-0.
Sierra Canyon 70, Marlborough 44: With Watkins sidelined due to an ankle injury, the Trail Blazers still improved to 20-0. McKenry Randolph has 24 points and 14 rebounds.
Martell Day 71, Rosary 50: The Monarchs (20-2, 4-0) were led by Adidir, who scored 25 points.
men’s basketball
Windward 81, Brentwood 63: Windward (18-6, 3-1) made 11 3’s and had big contributions from five sophomores, impressing Brentwood to advance to a tie for first place in the Gold Coast League. I noticed that I was making steady progress with a huge upset.
Sophomore JJ Harris scored 21 points and made five 3s. Sophomore Gavin Hightower scored his 16 points and sophomore Jeremiah Hampton added his 14 points. Brentwood (18-3, 3-1) scored his six 3s and his 18 points from Jordan Huegvan.
West Ranch 90, Saugus 62: Max Tengan scored 22 points on Saugus.
Valencia 98, Castique 55: Bryce Bedgood leads Valencia with 24 points.
Mira Costa 66, Redondo Union 47: The Mustang is a shooting star, with a record of 20-1. Dylan Black scored 18 points.
Thousand Oaks 73, Newbury Park 62: Elias Singh and Jacob Calval scored 22 points each for the Lancers.
Agora 70, Calabasas 60: Zane Miller led the Chargers (14-8, 4-1) with 19 points and Zach Wolfarian had 18 points.
Oaks Christian 46, Westlake 35: Isaiah Garcia gave Oakes Christian 14 points.
Palos Verdes 56, Peninsula 52: Alex Hassanein scored 21 points at Palos Verdes.
Foothill 61, Eldorado 53: Carlo Billings scored 17 points in Foothills (21-2, 5-0).
