To Charles Blanc: Former IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev is being beaten by unified 175-pound champion Artur Beterbiev “smash” Challenger Anthony Yard in six rounds on Saturday night at the OVO Arena in London, UK.
Kovalev is no stranger to yards (23 wins, 22 KOs), having knocked him out in the 11th round in Russia in August 2019. Sergey says he hasn’t made enough progress in yards since fighting him four years ago because he hasn’t fought someone talented enough to prepare for Beterbiev (18-0, 18 KOs). I feel
For some reason, Yarde’s promoters haven’t faced a talented light heavyweight since Yarde’s loss to Kovalev. Therefore, Yard, in Kovalev’s view, has not gained the necessary experience to give him a fighting chance to beat IBF/WBC/WBO champion Beterbiev.
It’s too late to gain experience and prepare for this fight against a quality opponent with yards. Yards need to wing it and wish the best.
If Yard loses, we recommend talking with your promoter about matching you with a better fighter so you’re ready to fight for the next world title.
Kovalev believes his yardage has likely improved since fighting him, but he doesn’t think it’s improved enough to beat a fighter like Beterbiev.
Again, the dismal middle-of-the-road opposition that Yard has fought for the past four years will eventually hold him back, shunning any chance of angering Beterbiev.
Sergei Kovalev told RingIQ TV about Artur Beterbiev, “He’s very naturally strong, he’s physically strong. And now he’s got a lot of experience from the amateurs, having fought more than 10 times professionally. I’m KOing you,” he said.
“Anthony Yard not ready to fight Artur Beterbiev Because he wasn’t tested like a real match,” Kovalev continued. “When he fought me, I lost a lot of pounds for 34 pounds in the light heavyweight division, so I ran out of energy. 2019 was the most difficult year of my boxing career.
“The first match was scheduled for June, but was rescheduled for August. That was three and a half years ago, and he [Yarde] For this fight, I have gained more experience and have been more physically conditioned.
“I think it’s going to be an interesting fight, but in my opinion, Arthur smash smash himI was in trouble when I fought Anthony Yard. In the 7th and 8th rounds, I was in trouble because I was thin and exhausted. I lost over 15 pounds because of this fight. He couldn’t stop me.
“I think Artur finishes him off in the middle of the fight. Boxing. I would be interested to see this too. With a very big Olympic and World Championship background, he has a lot of experience and is mentally older than Anthony Yard.
“In six rounds at the latest,” Kovalev predicted Beterbiev would stop Yard in six rounds. “I think so, 5, 6. They’re both big, strong and smart. So it’s an interesting fight, but I think so.
“It all depends on the setup. If he’s ready, he’s mentally ready is most important, if he’s mentally ready, he can show a big heart, but I get it .
“I wish both sides good luck and an interesting match for boxing fans,” Kovalev said.
