SUTTON — A month after winning their second straight state title, the members of the Sutton High School girls’ soccer team were recognized for their winning method by the selection committee.
Amid congratulatory remarks from board members at the December 20 meeting, seniors and team co-captains Taylor Bohanan and Natalie Smith provided insight into the team itself and its progression to the MIAA Division 5 Championship. .
When asked by Select Board member David Hall about the secret to their success, Bohanan said: We have such a great team that we are able to do it twice with the help of our coaches.
“Our team always sticks together, especially in the playoff season,” co-captain Natalie Smith said. It’s been going well in a row, and I was really happy to be part of it.
On balancing sports and schoolwork, Smith said: I think both school and soccer go hand in hand with it. ”
In Smith and Bohanan’s opinion, Susie’s toughest game was her Division 5 quarterfinal match against Gardner. Sutton was losing to the Wildcats with about five minutes left in the game. A “fantastic” goal from sophomore Anna Joseph and a penalty kick from fellow sophomore Annika Stockhaus secured the win for Sutton, Smith said.
“I was definitely trying to be there the whole time,” Smith later added. “When they scored, I thought, ‘Oh my God, is this the end?’ I scored a couple of goals, so obviously I had some faith.”
“It’s nerve-wracking in that position because even as a senior I’m like, ‘Is this the last few minutes of play?'” Bohanan said. “But I definitely trust our team.”
Of the six seniors on this year’s team, only one plans to play football in college. Macy Hutchinson is scheduled to attend Anna’s Maria’s College in Paxton in the fall.
In addition to Bohanan, Hutchinson, Joseph, Smith and Stockhaus, members of the 2022 Sutton Women’s Football Team were freshmen Jessica Sederlund, Christina Desel, Abby Junkins, Ava Magnusson, Sarah Mendoza and Madeline Nunemacher. Sophomore Caitlin Briggs, Madeline Cylonak, Molly Jenkins, Addison Jerome, Madeline Joyce, and Hannah Pratt. Juniors Keira Faden and Erica Wallace, senior Ruby Adamowitz and co-captains Caroline Howe and Kari Kolovski.
