SOCIAL CIRCLE, GA — You’ll hear the student section chant “S…C!” as fans attend the social circle’s women’s and men’s home basketball games. throughout the game moments. Alongside the students, the Redskins cheerleaders are chanting the same thing.
Of the 85-plus cheers Redskins have at their disposal, the “SC Chant” is their favourite.
Not only are the cheerleaders having fun, but so are all the fans in their social circle.
Coach Tanya Edmondson recognized the impact her cheerleaders had on the basketball game.
“Cheerleaders are important to the basketball environment,” Edmondson said.
But being a cheerleader is more than just participating in a sports day and cheering for your school.
The Social Circle has been gearing up for basketball cheering season since September, and the Redskins are now practicing weekly.
Edmondson said they take great pride in their work.
“Your commitment, your financial obligations, and your knowledge of the sport of both cheerleading and basketball all go into cheerleading,” Edmondson said. “They are also expected to be in good standing as students. They are expected to be representatives of Social Circle High School and our team at all times.”
The Redskins’ 16 cheerleaders, five more than last year’s team, are expected to cheer at more than 36 events after all.
Social Circle has three seniors, five juniors and sophomores, and two freshmen making up this year’s team.
Being such a small team was something Edmondson emphasized and makes the Redskins a unique team.
Their size doesn’t take away from the lessons students can learn from being in the cheer squad.
“The relationships you get from cheerleading are definitely the best part,” Edmondson said. “Commitment and responsibility are important things that students learn from being on a cheerleading team.”
