Wrexham delivered a big upset in the third round of the FA Cup today, beating Coventry 4-3. The English club plays in the championship three tiers higher than his opponents. The premise of Reynolds and McElhenney buying the club and producing a show about it was to take viewers through the twists and turns of reviving the ill-fated club and giving die-hard fans a reason for hope. (This is Netflix’s cousin to series like those produced by James Corden. Sunderland Till I Die.)
No premiere date has been announced for Season 2 of Wrexham, whose first season ended in October last year. The show is streaming on Hulu. That upcoming season will focus on the still-unfolding 2022-23 season, so today’s thriller seems more likely to weave into the narrative, visiting Wrexham as he goes 3-1 at halftime. Taking the lead, he eventually pushed it up to 4–1. It outlasted Coventry, narrowing the game to 4-3, almost equalizing in the final minutes, missing one chance right in front of goal.
“I’m completely speechless,” Reynolds tweeted. “What a club. What a town. What a victory.”
McElhenny tweeted a “surprised” emoji and added: Just…wow,” before swearing, “We are just getting started.” Reactions from fans flooded him throughout the day via social media.
In a media twist to the game, ESPN+’s live stream stopped just as the final seconds ticked and tension peaked. “ESPN+ FEED DOWN!!!” McElhenney tweeted frantically. “What’s going on????” The studio host took over the telecast, showing game highlights before the match officially advanced to the finals.
McElhenney, actor best known for producing and starring in FX/FXX comedy series It’s always sunny in Philadelphiateamed up with actor, producer and entrepreneur Reynolds to purchase Wrexham in 2020.
