Roiman Villa: Rashidi Ellis can rematch, put him to sleep

Roiman Villa scored an upset over Rashidi Ellis in last Saturday’s Davis vs Garcia card, but it was hardly without controversy, with the disputed majority card going underdog’s way after 12 rounds.

That’s not to say Villa (26-1, 24 KOs) didn’t do all they could, or left a completely bad taste in the mouths of fans. On the third card at -113, it was a pair of 12-round knockdowns that secured the victory (24-1, 15 KOs) over Ellis.

The fight was an IBF eliminator. So while Villa is lined up for the title held by Errol Spence Jr., or at least the interim belt Jaron “Boots” Ennis won in his later fight, Villa says he’s happy to give it to Ellis. A rematch, as he said in the ring after the fight.

“He disrespected me. That was his biggest mistake,” Villa said. “At the press conference, he was just talking about fighting Jaron Ennis next and ignoring me. It gave me extra power. God doesn’t like being ugly.”

“If he says he has doubts, we can do this again. There is nothing else he can do to change the situation. If you do, you can go home earlier next time, and I’ll put him to bed.”

Given Villa’s IBF situation, the move to give Ellis an immediate rematch might be bold (or “silly” depending on your stance), but it’s also the biggest fight for him and Perhaps it’s the right move because welterweight IBF doesn’t mean the world at large, it’s crowded right now.

It’s a fight that many people want to see again, and for Ellis, it’s definitely a given.
