Reds announce deal with right-hander Tyrone Guerrero to a minor contract. The deal includes an invitation to major league spring training.
Guerrero, who turned 32 on Monday, hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2019 and spent the last year in Japan. He had a productive year for the Chiba Lotte Marines, posting a 3.52 ERA in 46 innings of relief work. He gave up just his two home runs all year and he struck out 12.3 batters per nine innings.
Guerrero, who was signed out of Columbia by the Padres in 2016, pitched just two innings at San Diego before moving to Miami on a 2016 term deal headlined by Andrew Cashner. Although he had many chances in the Marlins’ bullpen, he wasn’t very successful.In 2018-19, Guerrero posted a 5.80 ERA in 104 innings. , but struggled with free passes and posted a career walk percentage of 13.6%, well above the league average of 8.4%.
He spent the 2021 season in Triple-A with the White Sox, but after failing to make the major league roster that season, he was released and signed on to play in Japan. Boasting a mile fastball, but like many hardball pitchers, he struggled with control. But he could be a useful relief pitcher for the Reds if that improved control can be brought back to the United States, as he gave up just 3.9 walks per nine innings in Japan.
