Red Sox pick right-hander Conor Seabold Allocation to open a spot on a 40-man right-handed roster Corey Kluberas announced by the team.
At 26 (turning 27 later this month), Seabould’s DFA record is surprising because he is generally considered one of the better pitchers in Boston’s system. He’s certainly older than most “prospects” at this point, but Baseball America (No. 23), MLB.com (No. 21), and FanGraphs (No. 7) each rank Red in his Sox. Ranked Seabold favorably within the farm. Indeed, Seabold has, to this point in his career, scored 25 runs in just 21 1/3 big league innings. However, the right-hander he achieved a 3.32 ERA in 2022 with a 24.7% strikeout rate and an excellent 5.3% walk rate in 86 2/3 innings of Triple-A balls. He pitched to his mid-3.00s ERA with an average or above strikeout and walk rate.
However, Siebold has battled injuries throughout his career, including several elbow troubles in 2021 and a forearm strain in 2022. These recent arm troubles certainly influenced this decision, even though Siebold finished his 2022 season looking healthy. Durability is a concern the 6’2-inch, 190-pound right-handed multiple scout mentions in his reports. The fact that he’s thrown just 364 combined innings in the major leagues and the minors since being drafted in 2017 speaks to those concerns. Considering there are no minor league games in 2018, the total number of innings is pretty low for a pitcher who has worked as a starter for four seasons as a pro.
Despite its durability issues, the Seabold is more or less an MLB-ready arm, with a solid double-A/triple-A track record and one more year of minor league options left. Interest from other clubs is likely through trades and waiver claims. The Red Sox have a week to trade Seabold, pass full waivers, or release him.
