Despite Sunday’s final win, the Texans still have two top 10 draft picks and other treasures from years of tanking. They have no problem with salaries and salary caps advancing. They’ve almost lost an influential footballer. (And there are owners who have done nothing to distinguish themselves since inheriting the franchise from their father.) Still, Houston has always played in weak divisions and huge markets, and owner Cal McNair has proven both malleable — he left it to Bill O. Brian takes over his entire franchise and burns it down! — and spends happily. Whether McNair is willing to fire his GM Nick Caserio to get a big fish like Payton, and also a first overall pick for a future coach, is losing his sting. I don’t know yet if it will. “But you can reset the franchise on day one. [of the draft] If you get it right,” GM said.
Knee Jerk Reaction: After firing a veteran black head coach for a season in a row, the franchise now faces an NFL diversity crisis. McNair and Caserio are conspiring to hire his former Texans quarterback Josh McCown, who has no coaching experience after high school, for his two years. And many smart people in this league who know McCown well believe he could be a rock star before long.
