The resumes of the co-leaders of American Express couldn’t be more different.
Jon Rahm and Davis Thompson were both 23-under-par heading into the final round on the PGA West’s Stadium Course, taking four shots from the rest of the field.
Rahm has three wins in his last five starts on the PGA Tour this week. In his last seven Pro rounds, his scores totaled 50 under par, the Spaniard’s winning the very event in 2018. He is a former US Open champion and currently ranked No. 4 in the world.
Meanwhile, Davis Thompson is making his seventh appearance as a full PGA Tour member. After the 2022 season, he graduated from the PGA Tour’s development circuit, the Korn Ferry Tour. Thompson is a 23-year-old University of Georgia graduate who is realizing his dream of becoming a professional golfer. In Lahi Quinta, his game is tailored exactly the way he wants it.
Rahm started the day two shots behind but took the lead at 7-under 65.
The Spaniard may have an advantage over Thompson in terms of experience, but that doesn’t mean he disrespects his opponents. Rahm said he wouldn’t be surprised if the 23-year-old hit a few more birdies before he left the track on Saturday.
“Yeah, I’ll be surprised if I tee off tomorrow with a tie for the lead or a tie for the lead,” said Rahm. “I’m pretty sure he’s going to get a couple because of the way Davis has played, and I’m probably going back to a couple.
