Francesco Calvi scored twice to set the stage for the Terra Linda Boys’ football team for a 3-2 comeback victory over Tam on Monday night. Redwood scored his two goals in his final ten minutes and overwhelmed the Sun his Rafael in his 3–2 game.
Originally a day without MCAL matches, Monday could turn out to be a pivotal day in the league’s title race.
Both games were alternate games that were rained out on December 10th. This result put Redwood (8-2-2, 7-1-1 MCAL) in first place for him with 22 points. Idle Novato and Tam are second with 20 points. Terra Linda, who has the game in hand, has 19 points to put him in fourth place. San Rafael is fifth with 17 points.
Tam led 2-1 at half-time, but Calvi’s second score of the game tied at 2-2 before Ryan Santos scored the winner about ten minutes into the hour.
Trevor Islam continued Tam’s blistering scoring streak with help from Noah Pedersen to score another goal after scoring six last week. Terra Linda was also credited with an own goal.
San Rafael (5-3-4, 5-3-2) also maintained a 2-1 lead early in the second half thanks to goals scored by Norman Telles and Kevin De Leon. According to his Twitter account for San Rafael Athletics, Tellez’ goal was a solo effort near the end of a long run. Jose Luis provided the assist on the other goal.
The Bulldogs still held the lead when goalkeeper Daniel Maldonado made a big save to keep the score at 2-1 in the 70th minute. Redwood didn’t budge. The Giants mirrored the comeback he staged in his MCAL semifinals last year in the second half when he scored twice to stun the Bulldogs.
Theo Vasicek equalized in the 73rd minute and Thomas Griffin crowned the winner a few minutes later. The Redwoods first goal was scored by Owen Swenson.
Redwood-San Rafael and Tam-Terra Linda will meet again on Saturday at opposite venues.
