PITTSBURGH – Thanks to the heroic efforts of redshirt senior quarterback Nick Patty and kicker Ben Soles, the Pitt Panthers have beaten UCLA in the Sun Bowl for many years.
The Panthers trailed by seven at halftime, 14 with 8:45 left in the third quarter, and one with 34 seconds remaining, but Saul’s fifth field goal came in between the uprights with four seconds remaining. He swerved and led the team to their first bowl victory in three years, earning congratulations from pit fans and players past, present and future.
The recruits who had just signed on to the program were the first to share their excitement.
Some former players who opted out of the Sun Bowl because they moved or transferred to the NFL, or graduated long ago, showed that they were bleeding pit blues and gold by attending the celebration.
Eventually, the current Pitt players and coaches shared their excitement and some trash talk after celebrating with the team on the field.
