Phoenix Suns PG Cameron Payne won the league’s NBA Cares Community Assist Award for December.

“Today, the NBA announced that Phoenix Suns guard Cameron Payne was the recipient of the December NBA Cares Community Assist Award in recognition of his commitment to philanthropy in donating and mentoring youth during the NBA Cares season. This award recognizes the players in the league and NBA who best demonstrate their shared passion for giving back to their communities each month of the regular season.
“Paine has focused much of his community engagement on mentoring and often talks about how much mentoring helped him grow on his NBA journey. , is passionate about giving back to his hometown.During the Season of Giving, Payne adopted 15 families for Christmas as part of the second annual “15 Families at Christmas with Cam Payne” initiative and brought them to the state of Arizona. We have fulfilled the wishes of 15 families from the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central.
“Paine invited the family to a Christmas dinner, followed by gift-giving at the Footprint Center. Payne capped off the evening by giving each family a $250 gift card to the Fries Food Store for photos and autographs. Also during the holiday season, Payne participated in “Christmas Shopping with the Suns,” where 20 kids from the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation and Solano’s No Limit Hoops visited the Phoenix Suns at local Target. In his hometown of Memphis, Payne made a donation of $10,000 to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital on Dec. 26.
“In November, Payne will host a Thanksgiving celebration for 50 mentors and mentees from Big Brothers Big Sisters in Central Arizona to encourage youth mentorship and reach more people of color. We hired a mentor, and the mentee was invited to the Footprint Center for a Thanksgiving dinner and dessert served by Payne and his family, as well as a pop-a-shot on the arena video board , arcade games, NBA 2K and more fun game nights.
“I want to thank the community for doing so much for me and doing their best to give back to me. Thank you for all your work,” Payne said. It doesn’t stop here. My hope is to continue to inspire these children and inspire them to participate in volleyball themselves.
