Former France captain Patrice Evra criticized French players’ attitude towards Karim Benzema during the World Cup in Qatar in an Instagram post.
The Real Madrid forward withdrew from the French camp ahead of the tournament with a quadriceps injury, but his injury was not serious enough to give him game time. left-back Evra was ‘disappointed’ by the treatment of Benzema.
“On the human side, I had a small problem and was disappointed with the human attitude (…) From the outside, Karim [Benzema] upset a lot of people. You, Player, for not supporting him… you must go to war for the Player (…) Consider the case of [Ángel] Di Maria, who was injured throughout the World Cup, played and scored in the final. That’s the coach’s responsibility. He makes a decision, we told Karim to do his thing. But you, player, I think [Didier] Deschamps always puts the team ahead of the players. It’s also said that some of the players were angry, jealous, or he was overshadowing you,” Evra’s post read.
Evra adds: “You are making the same mistake as the 98-time world champions who thought the French national team was theirs. The French national team belongs to everyone. We want to decide who comes and who should come. But it’s not necessary and we shouldn’t make the same mistake. Our team has the Ballon d’Or.If he was still here, we would have waited for Karim before lunch. I’ve never seen you fight for it.”
Just days after France lost to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final, Benzema announced his retirement from international football on social media.
