As of Tuesday night, the Carolina Panthers were in violation of NFL rules regarding their search for a permanent head coach, multiple sources told CBS Sports.
League executives called the Panthers Wednesday morning to remind the team that all members of the search committee must complete mandatory comprehensive recruitment training before the search can begin. . Five coaching candidates are interviewed.
Nicole Tepper, the wife of Panthers owner David Tepper and chief administrative officer of Tepper Sports & Entertainment, said as of Tuesday night that she had the necessary information to participate in the interview, sources said. No comprehensive recruitment training was provided.
“Comprehensive recruiting training is a key component of our efforts to promote an equitable recruiting process,” said NFL senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer Jonathan Bean. Any suggestions that the mandatory requirements have not been met by the applicable club will be addressed and rectified immediately.”
A spokesperson for the team responded to a request for comment, saying, “She had been trained prior to participating in the interview.” No further details were given.
Multiple sources refute the Panthers’ statement. It’s unclear if the league plans to punish the team in any way.

On December 2, the league sent a memo to all teams, including the chief executive officer, club president, head coach and general manager. In step 1B of the memo (near the top of the page), the league dictates that teams require comprehensive recruiting training.

The League will then provide eight different consulting groups/consultants to conduct the required training, including links to how to access this information. A source said the team received multiple emails and communications about the importance of having all members of the search committee personally trained.
General manager Scott Fiterer said two weeks ago that interviews for the head job were “not going to be a large group,” but the Panthers have now submitted requests for at least a dozen coaches.
As of Thursday night, the Panthers had already interviewed Steve Wilkes, Jim Caldwell, Frank Reich, Shane Steichen and Ejiro Evero.

David Tepper is looking for a third permanent head coach since buying the team in 2018. Tepper succeeded Ron Rivera and fired him near the end of the 2019 season. After hiring Matt Rule in 2022, he fired Rule five weeks into the 2022 season.
