Padres signed right-handed Eric Hanhold He signed a minor league deal last month, according to his transaction log on MLB.com. He is assigned to Triple-A El Paso.
Hanhold didn’t pitch in MLB last year. He was waived by Pittsburgh in spring training, who claimed he was waived by the Pirates in the Orioles’ final offseason. Hanhold accepted an assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis, where he would spend the entire season. Working only in relief, he posted a 3.40 ERA in 53 innings. His 21.2% strikeout rate and his 10.4% walk rate were each a little worse than average, but he racked up ground balls with his 62.7% excellent clip.
The University of Florida’s product reached its highest level the previous season. He had also won a cup of coffee three years before him with the Mets. Between the two clubs, the 29-year-old has recorded his 12 2/3 major league slots. He allowed his 11 runs (10 earned runs) and in that stretch he had eight strikeouts and he had four walks.
Despite a pretty impressive minor league show last year, Hanhold never got an MLB appearance in Pittsburgh. At the end of the season, he qualified for minor league free agency. He sees himself opening next season with Chihuahua as a bullpen depth option.Throughout part of four Triple-A campaigns, Hanhold owns his 4.60 ERA and 20.1% strikeout rate.
