The Orioles announced Wednesday that they had acquired a lefty Darwinson Hernandez from the Red Sox in exchange for cash.first baseman Levin Diaz Quotas were again designated to create a spot on the 40-man roster.
Hernandez, 26, gives O an arm that can miss the bat at the elite level, but has also suffered from uncomfortable command issues throughout his career. Hernandez has struck out his 32.3% of his opponents in his 85 1/3 innings of the league in the majors, which comes with a dismal 17.7% walk-his rate. He maintained his 3.17 earned run average in his 2020-21 season, but his opponents were only 6 2/3 innings in which he scored 16 runs and his all-time defense this season. The rate came to his ugly 5.06. Hernandez has two options left in his league in the minors, averaging over 95 mph in the heater.
For Diaz, this is an incredible fifth DFA of the offseason. He first went by Waver from the Marlins to the Pirates, and the Orioles claimed him (for the first time) from Buccos shortly thereafter.Baltimore traded Diaz to Atlanta, who named him five days later. The O’s requested him again on January 5, but his latest stint on the Orioles’ 40-man roster apparently will only last him five days.
A whirlwind of dizzying deals ensured a chaotic and volatile winter for Diaz. Diaz is .181/.227/.340 and has 343 at-bats for a big leaguer, but in two Triple-A seasons he has batted .250/.325/.504.
The Orioles have been looking to add depth to their left-handed swing at first base all winter, so they’re trading Diaz for two claims and a former Royals slugger. Ryan O’Hearn, they specified for assignment almost immediately. Indeed, the goal is to get players like Diaz and O’Hearn to pass waivers so they can be kept as non-roster depth options in the upper minors.
So far, however, no team has successfully waived Diaz. His glove charm and decent power production in the upper minors continue to spark interest from other clubs throughout the league. (determined by last year’s standings), Diaz has yet to overtake them on the waiver wire (he landed in Atlanta in a trade, not a waiver claim). Only time will tell if O can finally succeed this time around, but it wouldn’t be a big surprise if Diaz landed again at another club via waiver or a small trade. He will be resolved within a week.
