Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has filed one of the boldest accusations against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to date.

The Ukrainian WBO, WBA, IBO and IBF belt-holder didn’t mince words in a recent video uploaded to his Instagram page.

“The attack on Ukraine was probably to protect Russians who didn’t want your protection,” Usyk said (subtitles courtesy of Anton Gerashchenko). “Like you attacked Czechoslovakia many years ago, you came to other cities, Georgia, etc. You are protected everywhere, but Russia itself does not protect the Russians. You never protect them. You are fighting fascism and Nazism that do not exist.”

Russia attacked Ukraine for the first time on February 24th last year. Usyk, who at the time was in England to negotiate his rematch with Anthony Joshua, took a break from his boxing career and returned to his home country to join the Territorial Defense Battalion. Usik later decided to run against Joshua and obtained permission from his government to do so. Usyk defeated Joshua by points on his 20th August in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

“You are the Third Reich in all its many manifestations,” Usyk continued, referring to Russia. “What Hitler didn’t do, your president continues to do. Can you imagine? Yes.”

The undisputed former cruiserweight champion, Usik, is currently in talks to face England’s WBC title-list Tyson Fury for the undisputed heavyweight crown.

BoxingScene.com’s Keith Idec on Monday reported that if an offer to host the match in Saudi Arabia does not come soon enough, organizers would consider holding the match at Wembley Stadium in London. and promoted by Frank Warren of Queensbury. Usyk is backed by K2 Promotions. Arum said Usyk may have to compromise for a smaller share of the financial pot if the match were played in England, as Fury would be a clear driver of earnings.
