For teams like Providence Men’s Basketball and Bertram Trail Women’s Soccer, there’s no need to fear a playoff cut.
For others, the tension is just beginning.
The Florida High School Athletic Association released the latest basketball and soccer rankings this week. These are the latest numbers that will ultimately determine district seeding and playoff berths for the 2022-2023 Winter Sports season.
For classes 2A to 7A, district tournament champions automatically qualify for the postseason, while the other large berths (4 per region per class) end up in the power rankings.
These ranking windows are rapidly closing. The boys and girls soccer regular season runs until January 21st. Women’s basketball will continue until January 28, but the rankings will end on January 21.
Here are the ranking details and some key stories to watch.
Men’s basketball: Oakleaf faces battle in District 3-6A
There can be no doubt. 1st in Class 3A and 5th overall statewide Providence is Jacksonville’s Hoop King at the moment, as well as Ribot (Region 1-4A) and North His Florida Educational (Region 1-2A) am. top of each district. But a fascinating showdown looms in Districts 3-6A.
There, the impressive Oakleaf team leads the district. The Northeast Florida team posed their strongest threat to date against Providence by keeping the stallions overtime at the Fortegra High School 9:12 Invitational. The Knights are also 1st in Region 1-6A and promise to have their best season yet.
But they are followed by third-placed Nease in the region and 2022 state runner-up Ponte Vedra, who are close to fourth. Bryson Utter of Nease and Nathan Bunkosky of Ponte Vedra are the top all-rounders in St. John’s County.
Orange Park, Fleming Island and fast-moving Fletcher are also on the rise, giving the district an outside chance to produce up to four playoff qualifiers. Circle Oakleaf – Orange Park on January 20th and Nice – Ponte Vedra on February 3rd are the matches to watch.
Women’s Basketball: No Room for Error in District 4-4A
What are the strengths of the 4-4A district? The district includes more than five top-ranked teams from regions 1-4A, making it not impossible for the region to offer all four of his general slots in the region.
Bishop Kenny’s solid defense leads the pack with a 17-1 record, first in the region and fifth statewide. Ranked 10th in Class 6A, Oakleaf is the only school in northeastern Florida to rank within the top 25 state rankings.
But not far from Crusader are four other candidates in the district. That list includes his sharp-shooting rival Boles, who will move to his center at John A. Baldwin Athletic on Thursday night. Paxson has an excellent guard trio of Anslie Hicks, Nina Comma Hill and Kennedy Weimer. A new pair of beachside and Tokoy he creeks in St. Johns County.
A battle for 2nd or 3rd place in the district and a chance to avoid Bishop Kenny in the semi-finals of the district tournament can be important.
North Florida Educational, Oakleaf and Providence also lead regional races.

Youth Soccer: Great Trios for Districts 1-7A
It’s no secret that the Mandarin, which ranks third in Florida, dominates Districts 1-7A. However, this division is so intense that the Mustangs don’t always come out on top from the division tournament.
That’s thanks to Creekside’s St. Johns County Duo, who are second in Region 1-7A, and Bertram Trail, which is close to fifth. The Bears are so far the only team to keep the Mandarins off the winning line and remain tied at the Holiday Cup in December.
Based on their rankings, all three players look like postseason rocks, but they have some tough games that could change the division’s standings.
In addition to Chinese, Harvest Community also took first place in its region, taking first place in Region 1-2A.
Women’s soccer: St. Johns County pairs soar
No team sport shows the strength of Northeast Florida like women’s soccer. Women’s soccer produced three local state champions last year and could do so again in 2023. Bertram Trail (Class 7A) and St. John’s Country Day (Class 2A) rank him #1 and he #2 in Florida. , with Pontevedra in 10th overall, leading a strong Class 6A contingent.
But south of Jacksonville, two more programs are booming.
In its first year, Beachside ranked first in District 4-4A and second in Region 1-4A. Tocoi Creek, now in his second year, is closing in on his No. 4 spot in the region. Both have coaches with playoff experience (Beachside’s Ron his Messick, Tokoy Creek’s Jay Shepherd) and young attackers who have shown they can score goals (Beachside’s Peyton his Thomas, Tokoy Creek’s Kari Robinson). .
