Jan. 6 — Oklahoma City — Norman High has tasked its senior leaders with opening its first non-Norman game of the season.
In the first quarter, senior point guard Kayson Cole hit a floater in the lane and a deep 3-pointer on back-to-back possession to give the Tigers the lead. Norman High led by as many as six in the first quarter before North West Klassen equalized for him 6–0.
Early in the second quarter, it was Marquis Combs-Pierce’s turn to take over the game offensively. The senior forward scored five points on two possessions to put the Tigers back in front.
Hunter Miller then found Cole open behind the arc, extending his lead to eight points.
Norman High set a season-high points score with a 71-56 win in the first round of the Putnam City Invitational.
“We’re starting to gel,” said NNHS head coach Cory Cole. , got the post play. It’s just a good win. We’ve seen different players step in and step up.”
In addition to Kayson Cole and Combs Pierce, the Tigers got a big boost in the paint from senior Matthew Willenborg. Willenborg slammed the ball into the basket early in the third quarter and gave the Tigers momentum with a vicious two-handed dunk.
Wilenborg scored ten points in the second half, four of them from above the rim.

Norman High will face Lawton on the winner’s side of the bracket on Friday at 5:30 pm.
